Installing OSR 5 is very straight forward and should not cause any
major problems. These notes are aimed at BDS Technical Staff and
not the end user. If you are an end-user and are attempting the
install then this should make sense - if not don't try it.
These notes should be used in association with the OSR 5 release
notes supplied with the system.
READ THIS CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU START
During installing the software you will need to phone SCO during
NORMAL OFFICE HOURS for a registration key. Make sure there is
enough time if an re-install is needed.
The complete installation and configuration will take about 2-3 hours on
a P5/75 and about 4-5 hours on a 486 DX/33.
Note: If there are ANY errors during the load START AGAIN, try switching
OFF Internal and External cache in the BIOS during the load. If you
cut corners here you may well get stuck later on.
Make sure you have:
OSR 5 Boot disk
ATAPI BTLD disk (if installing from EIDE CD Rom)
CD Rom
Serial numbers
If upgrade you need 3 serial numbers & Keys
Host
Enterprise
Xenix 2.3.4
Non upgrades
Host / Enterprise
User Licences
As appropriate
Latest Release Supplement
Usually located on disk if setup in Edin, or
on latest backup tape or an OSR 5 utility tape.
Note: You can download the Advanced Hardware Supplement
(ftp://ftp.sco.com/AHS/5.0/sco/5.2) if you are using an ATAPI CD
as the wd driver is a lot more robust.)
SCSI Tape Drives should be set with an ID of 2
SCSI CD Rom drive should be set with an ID of 5
If Using EIDE CD ROM at the boot prompt:
Boot: defbootstr ahslink=ATAPI
(If using the AHS wd driver then use ahslink=wd)
If the system has a SCSI hard disk you may need to force it e.g.
at the Boot: prompt type
defbootstr Sdsk=alad(0,0,0,0) ahslink=ATAPI
Follow instructions on screen
'r' to replace driver
Install from SCSI CD ROM (Use to select)
CD is on the Primary Controller select 0 as Host adapter type
Secondary 1
If it is a Master select 0 as SCSI ID
Slave 1
At serial number question:
If this is an Upgrade enter HOST serial number and key, you will be
asked for data. Once entered you will be asked the Xenix
serial number and key.
So if upgrading from Xenix to Enterprise you:
Enter the HOST serial number & key
Enter the data when asked for
Enter the Xenix serial number and Key
Don't use the ENTERPRISE Ser. No. at this point.
Installation Type : Fresh
Site name : The machine name e.g. bdsedin, bdsl etc.
Domain : Unless they are going via Service Provider then
use uucp
Security : Low
Timezone : No we are NOT in the states, select Europe
Disk setup : Select (with <SPACE>) - Customise
Swap space - At minimum 64Mb, otherwise
2 x RAM, the more the better.
Bad Tracking : If you want but will add time, not normally needed
for modern disks.
Networking : Will be default of None unless network card installed
Mouse : Select 'Microsoft Serial Mouse on Com 1' unless a
different mouse being used.
Mail type : MMDF (don't use sendmail )
The load of the software is automatic from this point on. If any errors
occur, try a 'retry' otherwise start again.
Once installed re-boot as advised.
To speed things up and reduce the load, go into single user mode
and disable scologin with : scologin disable
READ THIS VERY CAREFULLY:
============================================================
If going via HOST to Enterprise YOU MUST REGISTER HOST FIRST
contact SCO on 0800 136063 (ask for registration). We are
registering ALL serial numbers as BDS and not the end user.
This is done via:
scoadmin -> Licence -> Register
If going only to host then you will still need to register but this
can be done at a later point. It may be easier to continue with the
rest and register when install finished.
==================================================================
If m/c is getting Enterprise then:
Install Enterprise via scoadmin -> software manager -> Install New
If there are any additional user licences, install them via:
scoadmin -> licence manager
You will still need to register but this can be done at a later
point. It may be easier to continue with the rest and register when
install finished.
Register Enterprise/User licences by phoning SCO on the number above.
==================================================================
Once the system is up and running:
If the tape drive has not been automatically linked in you will
need to run: mkdev tape
Load the utility tape (tar x8)
(or extract /usr/utilities and /usr/local from the most recent backup.)
Load AND apply the release supplement:
LOAD: scoadmin -> software Manager -> Software -> Patch - >
Load patch -> media image (select with Down arrow)
/usr/local/images/rs500
APPLY: scoadmin -> software Manager -> Software -> Patch - >
Apply patch -> Hard Disk
Select release Supplement 5.0.0d from list
FULL apply of product.
Install ATA software if needed. This is done via:
scoadmin -> software manager -> Install new - > Media image
/usr/local/images/ata3 Onboards etc.
/usr/local/images/ata5 Easy I/O etc.
Note: Don't use the ata3 drivers under OSR5 unless you really have to.
If there is a secondary filesystem then:
Edit /etc/default/accounts, so that HOME_DIR points to
the correct place.
Add the following users via:
scoadmin -> Account Manager -> users -> add new
Name : admin Password : admin
Name : vet Password : don't password account
Give admin FULL authorisations : Highlite admin (TAB and ARROW keys)
Users
Authorisations
Use TAB & Return
Add a password to the nuucp account e.g. passwd nuucp and use the
password on uucp.
Run our configuration program:
/usr/utilities/init.osr
Edit the following files:
/etc/default/tar Set correct for the size of tape.
/usr/local/lib/xc/.xc Set the speed correctly
/usr/lib/uucp Set Devices/Systems/Dialers etc.
In order to reduce memory usage some of the start up scripts need changed,
the files below reside in /etc/rc2.d, and may or may not be present on the
version of OSR 5 you have.
S86sendmail Add exit 0 as 2nd line
P86mmdf " "
S25pm " "
Run the following:
/usr/utilities/switchon
/usr/utilities/smail.conf
Install edge software if needed. This is done via:
scoadmin -> software -> Install new - > Media image
/usr/local/images/edge
Edge is now per CPU, you will have to run Edgemenu, pick Utilities
then Activate. Fill in the details, Edge is registered to the END
USER so fill in the user details, printout the form and fax to
Edinburgh. We will fax to States and get key which can be entered
via the modem at a later date. Edge will run for 60 days without
the registration key.
Hardware:
Use mkdev serial to add com2 if needed
mkdev parallel to add parallel printer support
If there is no SCSI tape then run mkdev tape to remove it
from the kernal
Run /etc/conf/cf.d/configure and set the number of buffers
1 -> NBUF to 600
Relink kernel
Configure the printers via:
scoadmin -> printers
Configure the terminals as normal via stalladm/easyadm
Now install the vet system from the latest backup
Note: OSR 5.0.0 if getting pretty old now, if you are
re-installing you must apply the following patches:
