How do I configure Windows 95 to connect using PPP?

The configuration for Windows 95 client follows:

• Make sure your modem is configured correctly.
  • My Computer
  • Control Panel
  • Modems

• From the desktop go into "Accessories" and select "Dial-Up Networking":
  • Select "Make New Connection" by double clicking on it.
  • You will be prompted to name the connection from there. Select "Configure".
    1. For "General", set connection speed to that configured on the unix computer (9600 is recommended for initial configuration).

    2. Under "Connection", "Connection preferences" should be set to:

       8 data bits
       None parity
       1 Stop Bits
       

       "Call preferences" should only have "Wait for dial tone before dialing" selected.
       • For "Port Settings" "Use FIFO buffers" should be selected. Set the Receive Buffers to low(1) and the Transmit Buffers to low(1) as well.
       • Under "Advanced," "Use flow control" should be selected with option "Hardware (RTS/CTS)" marked. "Modulation type" should be set to standard.

    3. For "Options," check the box to bring up a terminal window after dialing. You may find that "Display modem status" under "Status control" is useful for debugging purposes.

  • Enter the telephone number for the unix server's modem. Finish the setup procedure by selecting "Finish".

• Select "Settings" and open the "Control Panel"
  • Select the "Internet" icon by double clicking it.
    • Choose the "Dial-Up Networking" connection you just created under "Settings".
  • Select "Modems" and highlight your modem. Click on "Properties".
    • Set "Maximum speed" to the speed configured in the gettydefs file on your UNIX server (9600 is recommended for initial configuration).
  • Select "Network" and highlight "Dial-Up Adapter". Click "Properties".
    • The "Driver Type" should be set to the "Enhanced mode NDIS" driver.
    • "Bindings" should be set to TCP/IP.
    • "Advanced" properties should be set to record a log file. This log is kept in the Windows directory under the name "ppplog" and can be read with the Window's utility "Notepad".

      IPX header compression should be turned off.

      Select "OK" and exit back to the "Network" window.
      

  • Highlight "TCP/IP" and select "Properties".
    1. Under "IP Address," specify the IP address of the Windows 95 client.
       • Enter the IP Address for the Windows 95 client in the box specified.
       • Enter the subnet mask for the Windows 95 client in the box given. A typical netmask might be 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0; double-check this value with your network administrator before entering a value.
    2. For "Gateway," enter the IP Address of the unix server.
    3. If you are using Domain Name Service on your network, select "Enable DNS". Enter the name of the Windows 95 machine for "Host" and the fully qualified domain name for "Domain".
       • For "DNS Server Search Order" add the IP Addresses for your Primary and Secondary Domain Name Servers.

         Select "OK" and exit back to the "Network" window. Select "OK" again to exit to the main desktop.

• Test your connection by selecting "Programs" and from there go into "Accesories." From there, select "Dial-Up Networking".
  • Double click the icon for the connection you just created.
  • If the "User name" is anything other than "nppp", change it to "nppp". Enter the password.
  • Click on "Connect".

    A Connecting to status box will appear. The status will say "dialing" and when a connection is made, the "Post-Dial Terminal Screen" will appear. Type in the username "nppp" and the password assigned to it when prompted. You will see several screens of "garbage" scroll by. Press to continue. The "Connecting to" box will say "Verifying User Name and Password". The connection will then establish and the box will say "Connected" and a timer will appear. Your PPP connection has been successfully established.
